How To Watch Yo-Yo Ma’s Livestream For Free Online.
Yo-Yo Ma is paying tribute to those who have died in the coronavirus pandemic. The famous cellist will perform Bach’s Cello Suites in a virtual memorial this weekend, and the performance will be streamed online live from WGBH’s Fraser Studio in Boston.
Ma will perform six cello suites during the livestream, both to honor the deceased and to mark the resilience of our communities during the pandemic. His performance comes during what would have been the last leg of his Bach Project, a six-continent tour of Bach’s complete Cello Suites. While the final stops of his tour were cut short due to the coronavirus, the memorial performance “keeps its spirit alive,” according to New England Public Radio.
“In times of challenge, we’ve often come together in shared experiences,” said Jon Abbott, president and CEO of WGBH. “Yo-Yo Ma has a generosity of spirit, a solemnity that the moment deserves, and a warmth that reminds us of togetherness even as we feel alone. It is the strength we draw from each other that will help move us forward, and we are honored to host and produce this memorial event.
The choice to play Bach is a personal one for Ma, who played the composer’s music when he was first learning the cello at age four. He’s since gone on to play Bach’s music for six decades.
